Summary: The Assistive Technology Specialist is a valuable member of a multidisciplinary team that provides support to individuals with disabilities through the use of assistive technology. Their duties include conducting assessments, providing training, installing devices, and offering continuous guidance on how to use support and assistive devices effectively. In addition, they are tasked with researching and implementing new and innovative assistive technologies, as well as building and maintaining important relationships to ensure the success of assistive technology solutions for our clients.

Key Relationships:
  • Directors across all agency programs, direct support staff, Consumers, Supports Coordinators and Families
  • External stakeholders such as day programs, community contacts
Supervisory Responsibility: None. The Specialist will oversee program teams as it relates to assistive technology use.

Essential Functions:
  • Champions KenCrest commitment to being a Technology First Organization
  • Performs all aspects of assistive technology assessments assigned and recommends technology solutions to support identified outcomes, within the consumer's natural environments (home and/or workplace)
  • Develops technology implementation plans and trains persons served and support staff on the integration and use of assistive technologies.
  • Install necessary devices and assistive technologies in homes or workplace of KenCrest consumers.
  • Determine infrastructure needs to support assistive technology in group homes or in the community.
  • Supports staff to identify outcome measures to assess impact of technology supports.
  • Maintains data on key progress indicators for referral management and service delivery.
  • Responds to requests for assistive technology technical support and coordinates regularly with IT, group home staff and employers to troubleshoot assistive technology issues to ensure effective daily operation of assistive technology hardware and software.
  • Regularly reviews websites, literature and other sources of information on assistive technology and maintains an internal database of appropriate information.
  • Attends training opportunities to maintain skills and expand knowledge base in assistive technology.
Leader-Leader:
  • Constant analysis of key progress indicator data to ensure continuous improvement in service delivery.
  • Identify opportunities to explore and pilot innovations solutions.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related human services field or health technologies field preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities (physical, cognitive, and behavioral).
  • High proficiency with a range of assistive technologies including smart home technologies, iOS and Android operating systems and remote supports.
  • A candidate holding one of the following credentials is preferred:
    1. RESNA Assistive Technology Professional Certification
    2. Assistive Technology Specialist Credential
    3. Tech First Shift Enabling Technology Integration Specialist Credential
  • Clear criminal record and child abuse check in accordance with state requirements.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Be capable of using one's body in a variety of postures and positions for varied periods of time (i.e., kneeling, crouching, sitting, standing, reaching, climbing/descending stairs) while working; be able to lift and move objects up to 30 pounds and do physical work; be able to push/pull and maneuver objects or equipment required for work.
  • Ability to drive up to 50 miles
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Be capable of visual and auditory scanning of the work environment to monitor the facility to ensure safe and effective operations.


Working Conditions:

The assistive technology specialist works at various types of program sites in the field with some time also spent in the office. Noise level is mild to moderate. Travel between work sites or into the community is required.
