Alternative Suspension is a program available to secondary schools to support students who, for a variety of reasons, are temporarily excluded from the school they attend. Under the supervision of the Alternative Suspension Coordinator and in direct collaboration with the responsible Youth worker, the candidate will be mandated to provide occasional replacements. The Youth Worker substitute will be responsible to manage a small group of young people (about 6) in difficulty aged between 12 and 17 years old. (Www.alternativesuspension.ca).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will have to be very independent and will perform the following roles during the morning replacements:
  • Intervene individually and in groups with high school students who break with their school environment.
  • Perform homework coaching in basic academic subjects.
  • Ensure the application of the rules.
  • Intervene in a context of helping relationship.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies and procedures governing the protection of children and vulnerable people.
  • Understand and integrate the value of philanthropy within their position and in the Association, and participate in the annual campaign and / or other fundraising events.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Hold or be in the process of obtaining a diploma or a postsecondary certificate (college or university) in intervention or in a relevant field.
  • Have 1 to 2 years of experience in intervention, more specifically with a public 12-17 years.
  • Excellent ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in both English and French.
  • Have no judicial impediment in connection with employment.

Intervention: Proven ability to establish positive relationships with young people with behavioral problems. 
Leadership: Guiding, motivating and inspiring others and yourself to act in order to achieve the desired results. 
Self Management: Work independently with minimal supervision. 
Creativity and Innovation: Design new ways and adapt common ideas to achieve desired results.
Integrity: Demonstrate responsible behavior at all times and maintain high ethical standards.
Problem solving: Identify a problem and work on it to find a solution.
